Scottish Endurance Championships 26, 27 & 28 June 2009, Perth Racecourse by Kirsty Graham
There was something for every horse and rider to enjoy at the three day festival of endurance held in the beautiful and historic grounds of Scone Palace.
Around 150 horses and their riders, of all shapes, sizes and breeds, enjoyed the weekend, with an opportunity to enjoy a historic and varied route as well as watch some of the top endurance horses in Scotland in action.
The weekend kicked off with a pleasure ride on Friday evening, as horses and riders started to arrive for the weekend events.
The Scottish Championships pride themselves on being a ‘traditional’ endurance route – a ride that includes challenging terrain and hills. The venue at Perth Racecourse had ideal facilities for horses and their ‘jockeys’, while the route started through the grounds of historic Scone Palace park and took in the Coronation Road, one of the oldest documented bridleways in Britain.
The flagship 2day 160km endurance ride at the Scottish Endurance Championships was won by Irish rider Helen McFarland on J.St Jake at over 14kph.
Helen McFarland is a frequent visitor to Scotland with her seasoned endurance horse Jake – the combination won the 80km endurance ride at the Scottish Championships in 2003, the first one day 160km ride in Scotland in 2006 and the Northern Championships in that same year. They can now add ‘Scottish Endurance Champions’ to their list of achievements.
Helen McFarland and Jake finished comfortably ahead of the field. In contrast, there was a flat out race to the line in the 80km endurance ride.
All riders in the 80km class made an error on course, so the pressure was on to make up time and speed. Four combinations battled it out to the line with Dumfries rider Nikki Todhunter snatching victory on her 17 year old part bred Arab mare Fayre Savanna.
“It was my first endurance ride, so I held back from the mass start as I had not intended to race. Savanna had other ideas and once we had caught up with the other horses she was in her element. We were first in and out of both vet gates, the pace was furious and the whole experience was totally exhilarating. I can honestly say I have never had so much fun in my life” Nikki said.
The 60km endurance ride was another close competition, with Tayside rider Heather Jones taking the win on her Arab mare The Dreamcatcher.
In other awards, the open teams competition was won by ‘Lothian Lovelies’: Evelyn Frame, Pamela Scougall, Constance Newbould and Anne Short. The Pasquill Trophy, for the Best Performance in the 80km endurance ride on Saturday and the 30km competitive ride on Sunday was won by Jean Weightman and Bryson's Chance.

The SERC AGM was a lively affair this year, with a number of rule change proposals. The most significant of these related to younger potential endurance stars.
Motions that were carried included a reduction in the junior age to 8, bringing SERC in line with EnduranceGB. In addition, it was agreed to create a new category of membership, Young Rider, 17 to 21 years old. Currently the Club offers no training aimed at younger members. In creating this category, SERC aims to encourage our future endurance riders, by identifying our young riders in order to provide training and mentoring to enable them to progress.
Club Chair Janice Thomson stood down after two years. She reflected on a 2008 that had included some notable successes. These included the Scottish Team sweeping the board in the Home International and Celtic Challenge team competitions, with Scotland victorious in both and winning Best Turned Out Team. Chef Evelyn Frame’s work was praised as well as the contribution of team stalwart Diane Michie, who has represented Scotland over every distance, a unique SERC achievement.
The Caledonia Challenge FEI*** had attracted an international field and SERC rider Sarah Norris had won the national 160k class.
SERC rider Cheryl Wallace had won the EnduranceGB veteran award for her horse Wrightfield Omar and had 5 major placing in endurance rides south of the border in 2008.
The Perth Racecourse venue and routes had been trialled in 2008 and would provide the Scottish Championships venue on 26 to 28 June 2009. The venue provided excellent facilities and the route was testing and varied. Plans were in hand to extend the route for 2009, to create a true championship challenge. Thee Championships in 2009 would include FEI** and * classes as well as the national championships.
Fiona Henderson takes up the reins as Chair for 2009, with Sheila Bruce elected Vice Chair.
The AGM was followed by prizegiving. For 2008 only, this included the Scottish Championship Trophies, with the Championships run as a series in 2008. Scottish Championships Series 2008
In 2008, instead of having a main Championships weekend, the Championships classes were been shared out amongst all nine SERC Branches.
Class winners were presented with their Championships rosettes at the ride, with all trophies presented at the Club AGM
