Start
8-wk progression of ridden work, polework or both
FIT TO START
Fit to Start is an 8-week progression through ridden work, polework, or a combination of both.
Class 1 is 100% inhand, with weekly pole exercises (devised by SERC’s friendly physio Robyn Dunn) aimed at developing core strength and flexibility.
Class 2 is a combination of the first 4 weeks of the in-hand polework and then the first 4 weeks of the ridden work from Class 3 below. Entrants have an option to include the final 4 weeks of polework (which can be ridden) along with the ridden work if they think their horse is capable.
Class 3 is 100% ridden, following a plan progressing from 10kms a week (over max 2 rides) between 5 and 7kph, to 30kms (over max 3 rides) between 8 and 11kph.
Class 4 is also 100% ridden, progressing from 10kms a week (over max 2 rides) between 8 and 10kph, to 30kms (over max 3 rides) between 10 and 13kph.
The last few weeks of Classes 3 and 4 allow for a SERC ride to count if available.
Riders may enter more than one class with different horses. Combinations one class only!
You can enter any class as an individual or opt to join a randomly chosen 4-member team drawn from across the Club. The winning team will be chosen from all teams that successfully get all their members ‘round and sound’ including polework/obstacle options.
All entrants successfully completing their chosen class will receive a Fit to Start 2021 rosette. It is felt that the polework would benefit all horses even if they’ve been kept ticking over, so, as an incentive, entrants successfully completing Classes 3 and 4 who also consistently follow the polework exercises will be eligible for a random prize draw for Pleasure ride tokens. This also applies to Class 2 entrants who successfully complete their programme and also choose to do the additional 4 weeks’ polework, Class 1 entrants will be set weekly Trec-style in-hand obstacles to overcome.
Ridden achievements should be evidenced by screenshot or photo from your chosen app, Garmin or similar.
Polework achievements should be evidenced by short videos of one example per of each exercise only (otherwise we’ll be swamped by data!). If you don’t have the technology, ‘honesty’ submissions will be acceptable. All submissions to serc.pr.group@gmail.com by 10pm on each Sunday night.
Entries open Friday 5 March
Close Friday 12 March 22:00
Teams allocated over that weekend and programme launches via Clubhouse Members’ Discussion Forum on Monday 15 March.
Challenges
Branch information sessions

A scenic route with fantastic views - hilly terrain, open farmland,
tracks, bridleways, quiet lanes. There is a lovely new extension to the existing
Tinwald route - almost all off road.
The Saturday and Sunday rides will be different routes.
(there will be more roadwork on the Rammerscales route)
A 2-day event with something for everyone. The FEI have blocked all horses who were at the venue from making entries at this current time and are liaising with athletes at venue and with those who had already departed to trace the horses no longer on site.
